No fun at all

I'm in need of some advice, and it's not a fun subject :( Baby constipation.

Brighton L-O-V-E-S solids. The first time she was having trouble with her bowels, I had been giving her rice cereal once a day with some sort of veggie. So I figured the rice cereal was the problem. I cut that out and have been giving her mostly fruits (bananas sparingly) some veggies (not carrots) and oatmeal instead of rice. I am still nursing her and only give her solids once a day (about 1 1/2 - 2, size 2 jars). The little stinker still hasn't, or doesn't want to, grasp the concept of sucking on a sippy or bottle, but I still try and give her some water/juice as well.

The only other thing I can think of is to just cut out solids completely, but she enjoys them so much that I want to try other things first.

Any ideas?

  1. When we finally brought Gabe home from the hospital a little while after he had the same issues, so the doctors at the NICU had us give him 1 oz. of apple juice(not watered down) once a day for a week, it worked wonders!!.. Now his favorite juice is apple juice, go figure!.. Good luck, she is getting so big!

  2. what if you cut out the cereal completely and also add prunes to the mix?

  3. Try feeding her prunes. It will work for sure!

  4. I second the apple juice. If she won't take a sippy cup mix it in with other foods. Don't cut out solids. Some babies just don't go as much. My older only went every couple of days.

  5. I have fed her prunes before and I didn't notice a difference. But do I need to do like only prunes for a week straight, type of thing? I wouldn't worry that she is only going every couple of days, but she is in some major pain when she does, and it is very traumatic for both of us :(

  6. Oh ya...they have prune baby food...she's gonna have to be a pruner. I would say the apple/prune juice but she's not sipping for you. Oooo try putting it in a straw and letting it fall into her mouth.

I'll show you what I mean today at chik!

  7. Just send B over here. I am not sure if it's the enviorment or what but both my kids go 3 times a day. It's one of their favorite pastd times. :)
But try the straight apple juice with a straw like Amy said and when she is going push her legs up to her chest it will cut down the pain.

  8. Owen had the same problem. He LOVES to eat solids so I'd let him eat, and then he'd get constipated. The problem wasn't what he was eating, but how MUCH he was eating. I had to cut back to like, just a few tablespoons of food at a time. He was not happy about it, but that totally solved the problem. I'm slowly working up to increasing the amount.
And for the initial "unplugging" process - I fed him a whole baby-food container of baby prunes. That did the trick.
