Process of Elimination

We are on a hunt for what is bothering our little girl. I refuse to believe a baby can cry in so much pain, and just say that it's 'colic'. One of the things she does is grunts in pain and squeals almost non stop after eating. Ashley mentioned she might be allergic to dairy because of another friends blog post. After some research, dairy allergy symptoms are very similar to acid reflux symptoms. So we thought, why not try some remedies for that. As of Saturday night, I am 'dairy free', and we got some soy based formula to supplement with as well.

Sunday morning Brighton was just not dealing with breastfeeding well. She was grunting non stop, and moving her head, and arching her back (which she's done before), but I had always assumed she was just trying to have a bowl movement while eating. After about an hour of off and on eating, she was finally 'full' I guess, and fell asleep. At the next feeding we decided to give the formula a try, and I would just pump. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Not only did she take the bottle like a champ, there was no grunting while eating or after, and she was just as content as can be to chill for a good 45 minutes before taking another nap! At the next feeding, I breastfed again, and sure enough same story... grunting, arching, uncomfortable, irritable. Then the next feeding we did a bottle again. Again, super happy, no fussing whatsoever. She even woke up a couple of times and just fell back asleep on her own (which she's never done).

I've done only breastfeeding today, and she's doing better (not as great as with the formula), but she's not acting like my milk is poison, so hopefully whatever is in my milk is slowly getting filtered out, and we'll have a happier, breastfed baby in a few days.

At our follow up Doctor appointment this morning, he said to keep doing what we're doing, and see how it goes for the rest of the week. Hopefully, it's not just coincidence, and we'll be on to something that will really help her. Her stats today: She weighed in at 9lbs 2oz (gaining 5 ounces in 3 days!). She has some baby acne going on, but nothing too crazy, and it seems to be clearing up now. And last, BIG thanks to Amy for letting us use Audrey's swing. Brighton L-O-V-E-S it :)

(she's watching her daddy mop fools up on COD... she's in awe ;)

  1. These pictures are SO cute! I'm sorry you have to go through all that. I hope it all clears up soon. I've had to cut out beans, broccoli, tomatoes, and chocolate from my diet. It's weird that those can cause such pain to a baby. I also supplement with formula and I think it really helps. Good luck! And good job on being so patient. You're a great mommy!

  3. Oh my gosh, that girl is cute. haha you can really see the poundage she is putting on!! I really like that last picture--of her "in awe", and the car seat one too. I will definitely know if I get some free time when I'm down. Maybe even tomorrow--I think we're supposed to be done a bit early. I'll call you!

  4. Poor poor baby! I hate when they just scream and it seems like you are so helpless. Alyssa was the same way...she would even scream in the car and I would just have to drive all the way from my parents to my house with her screaming. I use to stop and try and get her to stop...but she would keep screaming! So I eventually just kept driving. I feel your pain. Call me if you need a break and I would love to come watch her or something!

  6. I love the she loves the swing. What a lifesaver.

I was reading up on that whole dairy thing and it says that it could take 7 to 10 days for all of the dairy to move out of your system... which is crazy to me. But maybe she'll get better day by day if that's the problem.

I'm just glad to here that things are going better and you're figuring things out. She is darling. Those first two pictures are to die for. It's like she's saying, "Stop... I'm shy." So cute.

  8. I'm SO glad she's feeling better now!!! You solved the mystery!!! I wonder if that's what was wrong with Audrey all along. I have a whole can of soy formula with your name on it!

I'm so glad she likes the swing...it's all hers.

  9. Hey Jodee,
Your little girl is so cute. After reading your blog I can totally relate to you. My two youngiest boys did the same thing and we did many test with my middle child to find out that he was allergic to milk protien. So I had to stop nursing and use nutramigen (sp) which totally helped but we didn't figure taht out until he was 6 months old . So when my baby now started acting up we swithed to the formula quickly.

I hope you can figure out what is bugging her. It's not fun having a fussy baby:)

  10. Glad she's getting better. When I had Logan the ped. gave me a whole list of things not to eat/drink and because I was crazy nervous I didn't touch one of them. He was always an angel but I don't know if that had any effect on him. I finally asked the doctor if I could start having soda at his 3 or 4 month appointment (my first soda was delish). You think you are done with all the restrictions of things you shouldn't eat during pregnancy and there are just as many afterwards. Being a mom is rough....sometimes!!!

  12. I am so happy that you are finding the source. Constant crying can get very wearing on us moms.
Although, I read an article that says fussy babies turn out to be extremely intelligent adults:)

  13. That's good that you have figured something out to help her. I havent had a chance to tell you im so jealous of you and having a girl. Having a child has got to be one of the most amazing things to happen to ya. You cant even descride the feelings that you feel. I'm so glad that you have experienced it now and I cant wait to meet Brighton in person. Lots of love, Stacy
